A typical day in the life of an 8th grade English Teacher.
If you were ever wondering what a typical day for an 8th grade English Teacher looks like before, during, and after school, you’re in luck!
Background! My school goes from 7:45 to 3:30 with 6 blocks that are an hour and ten minutes long.
I wake up anywhere between 5:30 and 5:45 (the time depends on if I need to wash my hair). I finish getting ready, pack my lunch box, and hit the road by 6:30. I drive up a highway for about 40-45 minutes switching between Mix 104.1 and Kiss 108 because I like listening to voices in the morning. I get to school around 7:20 and hike up about 5 flights of stairs and I sit at my desk to log on to my computer/email. I pour my tea into my mug and eat my yogurt. For the next 20 minutes, I check my email and make sure my plan for the day is all set. I pick my homeroom up from the cafeteria at 7:45 and the day starts!
First class starts at 8. I teach the lovely kiddos some stuff and they leave at 9:10. I teach AGAIN, fixing things that didn’t work, reusing jokes that made the first class laugh (sometimes they fall flat the second time but I try!). When the time comes, I bundle up and take the kids across the dangerous streets to the STEM Center. (The streets are not actually dangerous, but walking across any street with a bunch of 8th graders is terrifying). I pick up a new class and walk back to the main building. I climb the stairs again and settle back into my desk for my prep.
During my prep, I do some printing, eat a snack, use the bathroom, fill up my water bottle, and do some correcting. After that, I teach the 3rd class. Then it’s lunch! I pick the kiddos up from lunch and it’s off to the 4th class. After that, we have “workshop,” where we get to go a little deeper into the material. I use this time for grammar. When the day ends my homeroom comes back, gets their things, waits until they are called, and lines up to go home.
After school is when the fun starts! I drive home for about 45 minutes listening to podcasts and get into pajamas AS SOON as I get home. Recently, I have been practicing the piano for about 30 minutes each day. Sometimes I play Fire Emblem or some phone games. I eat dinner, I do laundry if needed, I watch TV with my mom, and then I fall asleep on the couch. I have been trying lately NOT to fall asleep and instead read or do something productive. When I wake up (or finish being productive) I talk to my boyfriend on the phone, then I get ready for bed. (Check the Sunday night routine here).
